Hi Bob,
I bought my car off Nandor Darvis – the car is still in his name on the 1512 registry – see the ninth car listed (currently).
He owned the car since May of 1969. He remembered seeing the car on the dealership floor when it was new. He told me what was done to the car since when it was new.
There are several items that were changed such as he bought brand new ‘70 heads from AMC (He gave me the original ’69 heads that came on the car in the ’70 AMC boxes (with IBM punch cards attached) that the ’70 heads came in when he bought them. He also bought brand new (at that time) high flow AMC cast iron exhaust manifolds (they too are still on the car and they are for a four speed as they have the smog holes (plugged).
He also put on an Edlebrock Torker intake. It has a Holley 750 and open cleaner element on the car now. He also added an Accel coil and bypassed the vacuum advance on the distributor. He indicated that the motor, the transmission, the rear end, the radiator, etc has never been out of the car. I asked him about the clutch and he said ‘original’.
The car has 39K original miles on it .
The brakes were shot when I bought it. I have just finished with a complete brake job front to rear including rotors, lines, hoses, emergency brake cables (I need to finish hooking the cables up), rebuilding the original calipers, master cylinder, brake booster, etc.
I should change out the gas line and will be doing that next (converting it to stainless steel). I put in silicon brake fluid. The car runs fine and the clutch works perfect. He ran it at a track in Ohio to get the ¼ time, but never beat on the car after that.
Anyway, I just about flipped when he told me the radiator was original and was never out of the car - ever. He was very anal with the car. He said that he changed radiator fluid twice per year (once in the spring and once in the fall) with no misses. That is probably what saved the radiator.
The top hose is original, but the bottom has been changed from what I can tell. I do not believe the fan has ever been off the car, but then again, it may have as I would think the water pump would have been changed at this point. I have not decoded the date code on the pump yet (I will do this when and if I replace it).
The interior is all original including the carpet and both the interior and carpet are mint. The only problem is that he put in speaker holes into the door panels. The door panels are mint other than the holes (it’s a shame he did this). The car has a hang-under dash mounted 8-track player and hang-under gauge pod for oil pressure and amperes.
The car was re-sprayed white (the incorrect shade of white I might add). Its needs a good restoration to be mint again, but I probably will drive it the way it is for now. It’s a very early car. The VIN is A9M097X******. I calculate/estimate the car was built in early February.
Attached are some pictures of the fan that I just took today. The fan has a “68L” date code (see pics). I believe this would decode as November of ’68 (L is the 12th letter in the alphabet, but I do not believe ‘I’ was used (to eliminate confusion with the number one (1) ). Therefore “L” would be November. I think it makes sense that the fan would be a few months earlier than the production date of the car.
I also threw in a couple pics of the car and a picture of Nandor standing in front of the Scrambler. He is a total gentleman and pleasure to talk to.
I hope to one day completely restore the car. My car was (and still is) missing some pieces. Nandor moved a bunch of times (all within the Toledo area) during the time he owned the car. During the moves, he misplaced some of the original items such as the carb, the air cleaner and the smog stuff. I am sure there are a few things that I don’t remember right off.
Hope the pics of the fan part number and date code help us to document these cars better.
I would also enjoy hearing the story on your car. Also, a few pics and a description would be fun to see too!
Thanks,
Mark
I'll use the photo's of the fan provided in the post on what was factory original , for who

Sc/Rambler specific Minutia needed(tach firewall grommet)
Q:One of the firewall sealer plates seems to be unique to the sc/rambler. This is where the tach wire comes out of the firewall in the engine compartment (drivers side). Do you have a v8 Rogue to check? Looks like that plate had two or three different configurations and the hole was used for different things. Sure seems to be a strange place to run one small wire and a bug rubber seal? Need to know. Thanks, Mike

Sc/R Engine Cooling Fan Info Wanted
After this detail has been gone over it will be added to Concourse And Minutia areas ..
Have a guy currently restoring his car , so this info is wanted as soon as possible .
Q: I was wondering if anyone has pictures of the original fan and what the part number is. I just spoke with Jim Mckee and he claims the fan had 3 rivets but I see Gordy's picture with 4. Were there two fans? Ours has 4 so I am wondering if this was a replacement part.
We are having a heck of time getting the fan shroud to fit properly so I was wondering if there are any pictures of an original car taken from the back of the engine compartment so we can see if there is something we are missing.(end of quote)
Any photo's and description on this will help very much. Also note that I trust Jim's and Gordy's info as excellent . And we will run this "up the flag pole for completeness "

Here just in is more info from Mark:
quote:Hi Bob,
I saw the post on your blog about a gentlemen looking for a picture of the fan and what the part number is. Attached is a picture I had taken of mine which I am quite sure is original. You can zoom in on the part number which can be seen on two of the blades (the pic has enough resolution to see the stamped number). The part number on the fan is ‘3195201’ It has four rivets.
Feel free to post this picture on your blog.
Thanks and hope this helps,
Mark
Another note from Mark:
Hi Bob,
I’ll have to check next time I am at my building where my car is. I just started looking at my pictures last night and had one of the fan from the backside…so I figured I would send it. You may be on to something about more than one fan being on the cars. It wouldn’t surprise me at all. My car is the ninth one on the survivor list so if there is more than one fan we could possibly link them to production – if that has anything to do with it…but probably not. They probably used what ever was available as the cars rolled off the line.
Is your fan (3197749) a four rivet unit? Also, there should be a date code on it somewhere. I’ll have to look at mine close for the date code. This should help determine what could have come on the SC’s.
Thanks,
Mark Wanchisen
Here is Marks photo , his car is quite early , and I hope to get more info on the cars history .
As this helps very much to unravel the cars story...

Hi Bob.
The AMC 68 to 72 parts book lists 319 5201 as the correct SC/Rambler fan which is American V-8 Heavy Duty cooling. All SC/Ramblers have heavy duty cooling. Many of these fans have no part number on them.
These fans have 3 rivets and the blades are 5 7/8" long. This information is from note 2-17 for the 319 5201 fan. My original high serial number SC/Rambler has this fan. I do not know what the superceded fan number 319-7749 looks like.

Jim here is the 319-7749 fan . I'll try to photo the numbers later

Interesting SC/R production Date info.
Bob/Bill
Hopefully of interest to the "A" vs "B" debate - I offer the following info. I have two (2) SC/R's - one (1) - "B" and one (1) "A". The "A" car info is for the most part straight forward - VIN - 269105 - Body Tag - E086308 (4/4/69 - 4/12/69). The "B" car VIN is 305395 - or very close to the last car in your data base - Bill. More interesting - is the Body Tag build info - E111152 (6/6/69 - 6/14/69). While the "A" car is a one owner - never restored car I purchased from the original owner (I even have the original insurance binder info) - the "B" car had at least two other owners. During the body redo on the "B" car there was no evidence of it being originally an "A" scheme. It was represented to me at the time of purchase as an original "B" scheme car. Anyway - this info seems to confirm SC/R production in June of 69. If the "B" is correct - it also demonstrates - "B" production late in the run. I am very interested in seeing if there are any Body Tags latter than mine. Thanks - John J.

Interesting.
Looking over all of my VIN data it appears that SC/R production ended somewhere between 6-15 June 1969.
Interesting is that B schemes seem to sprinkled throughout the run and there were several built between 6-14 June.
Also I stick by my observation that B schemes comprised only 20% of the SC/Rambler production (around 300 cars) and not the 33% that is generally thought.
My VIN list is as random a sample as possible and it shows only 20% B schemes.

Sc/Rambler Throttle cable Minuitia/Concourse info
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330310543142&ssPageName=ADME:B:EF:MOTORS:1123
This is a current e-bay auction , that has details of the throttle cable .
From what I've been hearing this is a one year item only installed in the OEM factory 1969 SC/Rambler .
As seen in the car craft 1969 issue . They did a mock up of a cable that appears to not have fit well . Notice the return spring ...What is that ?? Obviously was not safe .
So a special cable was put in the car ...
here is the cable courtesy of Mike Lewis .(Anyone that has more to add , please do)
Car Craft picture . This car is believed the earliest "registered" car yet known .
Possibly the the car H.L. Shahan was given for his work he did for Hurst and AMC ..
