Sc/Rambler Brake Help
We had a recent question about the Brake Booster for the Sc/R and have some very good info donated by our panel of experts . Thanks to James McKee and Dan Curtis for these tips
The question From Larry:
Hello, do you have a pictures of the brake booster and the mounting bracket. I am not sure I have correct one. The brake pedal sits about 3 inches of the floor and does not have but little brakes. I ordered a new master from ADP but the booster does not act like its working. Also there are no spacers on the bracket is this correct? Thank You, Larry Allen
From Dan here:
The pivot bolt is frozen inside the shaft. We see it all the time at
the
restoration shop. Here is a picture of what is frozen. It is the
square
headed bolt that goes through the hollow horizontal shaft.
From Jim:
Hi Bob, Picture of a SC/Rambler booster attached. Notice the brake pedal to booster arm is straight from the brake pedal to the booster, Unlike the dog-leg arm on AMXs and Javelins. The SC/Rambler brake booster bracketry uses no spacers on the firewall. The largest brake booster rebuilder I know of is Cardone. They tell me there are some internal adjustments that effect the amount of brake boost transferred to the brake master cylinder. I use Kennedy American to rebuild all the brake boosters I use on my cars and customer’s cars, because he asks what car the brake booster came from and has your brake booster rebuilt and returns it. I am most satisfied with all the units he has done for me! I put a grease fitting in the bottom of the tube where the bracket pivots on the 1/2” diameter shaft with the square end. A shot of grease every couple of years keeps the bracket from freezing to the shaft and wallowing out the bracket with the square hole supposed to keep the shaft from turning. SC/Rambler booster check valves go straight into the brake booster housing. The master cylinder needs to on the brake booster with the hardware loose on the booster master cylinder studs for installation in SC/Ramblers, because there is no room to get the nut nearest the fender on the stud once the booster is installed. Its just way easier to take the master cylinder loosely attached to the booster and bracket assembly to get the master cylinder it in or out. With the booster out of the car its an ideal time to check out your clutch bellcrank bushings and boots, because of how much easier it is to change them if necessary. Regards, Jim

Sc/Rambler Blue Wheel color match
I don’t paint, because I have absolutely no expertise in this area. I am of the opinion the wheel color is supposed to match the blue in the stripes on SC/Ramblers. AMC cars were originally painted with acrylic enamel. I would expect any original paint cars to be heavily faded or completely chalked out by now. The vinyl stripes should have faded out to the black vinyl they were made on. Most current paints are a base color with a clear coat, because of its durability. The body color on my SC/Rambler is a recent Corvette Linen White color. I believe GM also painted this color on trucks. I like the color on my SC/Rambler and its easy to get a color match for more paint.
I have very good results with the paint the local distributor supplies the paint shop I use use. There is one locally that can convert the original AMC paint codes to a current paint color thats widely available. They have been in business for 52 years and have old car color charts for the old paint codes. At least for the AMC cars I have have had painted. I painted a Frost White AMX, the three colors on my SC/Rambler and an Alamosa Aqua Rogue with a Frost White top in the last ten years. The paint matched the paint in the trunk and inside the doors on the AMX and the Rogue. The SC/Rambler was a rotisserie job. Most of the better paint distributors have a machine for color match if they don’t have a conversion for 45 year old AMC paint codes, I believe the machine does a very good job at matching colors. I have not had any experience with spot in jobs on my AMC cars, because I haven’t done any of those. I am very pleased with the paint color match on my AMX and Rogue sitting side by side even though they were painted seven years apart. Its possible to get very close to the original SC/Rambler paint colors if you want to. Regards, Jim

Jim McKee Wiper Motor detail
I could not find how the wiper motor drive pieces are assembled on the wiper
motor drive arm in the Technical Service Manual, so I did this little drawing.
If I don’t remember the stack up between using the parts in AMC repair parts
kit 812 2354, I am sure there are some other people it would help. Its attached
below. Regards, Jim
